Here we go! Our annual trip to the Upper Peninsula for a week of fun at the cottage. We had a fairly uneventful trip which is saying something because it's 5 hours of driving in the car with the kids (a 6 + hour trip with stops). They did really well entertaining themselves with books and games. (Nathan and I entertained ourselves with the Waze app.) The girls always love crossing the bridge since they know we are getting close at that point. We arrived late afternoon, unpacked, and went out to dinner with the family.
Day 2 ~ Sunshine! (June 28)
The weather was beautiful which meant the kids were out at the water right after breakfast. They spent so much time down there all week and they were very excited to head to the beach for the afternoon. We packed up a picnic lunch and headed to one of the beaches down the road. Later we had a bonfire and made our first s'mores of the season.
Day 3 ~ The Soo! (June 29) We went to Sault Saint Marie for lunch and shopping. I took absolutely no pictures at all that day. Can you believe it? I totally forgot.
Day 4 ~ (June 30) Since there was a slight chance of rain we decided it would be fun to do some indoor activities. I had pre-made homemade Cheeze-It dough and cookie dough for the kids. We rolled out the Cheeze-It dough, cut it, pricked holes in the middle, and baked them up. While those were baking, the kids added mix-ins to their cookie dough. Later they made ice cream sandwiches to freeze for the next day! The rain was a perfect chance to watch a movie so we ate our Cheeze-Its for our movie snack.
Day 5 ~ (July 1) Our great weather returned so we took a walk down the road to where a family is converting a ship into a house. Ya, pretty cool. Then we made a picnic lunch for the kids and let them eat outside. They were very happy to eat the ice cream sandwiches they made the day before! We also did our toenails to be ready for the July 4th holiday. They turned out way cute.
Day 6 ~ Tahquamanen Falls (July 2) On Thursday we went on a day trip up to Tahquamanen Falls in Paradise, Michigan. It was about 2 hours away from the cottage and we had planned to leave right after breakfast. In true fashion, it seemed to take us forever to get going. My stomach was not feeling well and Megan seemed a little warm to me. We considered staying back instead of going but the kids were excited to go and Megan perked up when we talked about the water falls. We figured with the long trip the kids would have lots of time to rest and relax and we'd only be at the park a few hours. We stopped at The Berry Patch for lunch and suddenly Megan is full-on running a fever. I didn't know how high, but she was definitely warm and starting to get lethargic. Oh boy. Of course, we were REALLY in the middle of nowhere when this happened! Across the street was a little, tiny grocery store that mercifully had children's Tylenol. After a call to the nurse line at the pediatrician's office for reassurance, we gave her the medicine and lots of fluids. Within about 30 minutes, her fever was improved and her mood made a dramatic improvement. While she was still attached to my hip, she ran in the park and went up and down all the stairs to see the falls. You never would have known she wasn't feeling well. She was so excited to see the falls, too. We'd like to take the kids back again since we only made it to the Upper Falls. That night we all got to bed early and Megan's fever broke that night.
Day 7 ~ (July 3) I was up a few times with Megan overnight so we had a very low-key day. The kids were out and about playing in the yard, taking Gator rides, and just enjoying the cottage. After lunch Megan took a nap so Nathan and I walked into town to the art gallery and craft shops to browse. We ended up getting little piggy banks for the girls at the gallery and I found a new pair of flip-flops (super cute ones!). For dessert I made chocolate pudding. It's the only picture I took all day so I'll include it because it was really yummy! Do you love how I added a patriotic element with the sprinkles? :)
Day 8 ~ July 4th! This day was all about food, parades, and fun. I spent the morning making flag cake and Hawaiian macaroni salad, plus getting pictures of the kids in their red shirts. After lunch we went into town to watch a Mower Race (yee-haw!). For a special dessert, we made Firecracker Floats with the kids (red pop, blue pop, vanilla ice cream, Pop Rocks). They loved them! We had such a great day and the weather was so beautiful, too!
Day 9 ~ July 5 One final day at the cottage! Lots of playing outside and enjoying the sunshine! We left the next morning for home. We can't wait to come back!
